Airbound

Airbound is a Bengaluru-based aerospace startup that designs, manufactures, and operates ultra-lightweight autonomous drones for last-mile delivery. Its flagship aircraft — a blended-wing-body tail-sitter — takes off vertically like a rocket then transitions to fixed-wing horizontal flight, weighing roughly 2.5 kg while carrying a 1 kg payload (a 5 kg version is in development). The core insight is physics-first: conventional drones spend most of their energy lifting their own weight; Airbound's drones weigh less than the cargo they carry, pushing cost toward 10 paise (~0.1 cents) per km vs. the ₹2/km cost of a scooter today. The company operates its own delivery network and manufactures in a 43,000 sq ft Bengaluru facility. Its first commercial customer is Narayana Health, flying diagnostic samples between hospitals. A government MOU with the Andhra Pradesh Drone Corporation targets a three-city delivery network handling 10,000 flights per day. The long-term vision is to become the aircraft platform that logistics operators everywhere fly — "the Boeing role, not the airline."
