Base Power deploys large home battery systems — up to 40 kWh per unit — into residential homes and keeps every battery on its own balance sheet. Customers never buy the hardware. Instead, Base earns revenue two ways: selling retail electricity per kilowatt-hour in deregulated markets (Texas and now Illinois), and signing tolling agreements with utilities that pay Base for on-demand control of its aggregated battery fleet for grid reliability. Batteries provide whole-home backup during outages and continuously arbitrage real-time electricity prices. Base designs and manufactures its own hardware at "Factory One" in Austin, employs its own licensed electrician crews for installation, and builds the full software stack — from battery firmware to energy-market trading algorithms. Founded in 2023 by Zach Dell (son of Michael Dell) and COO Justin Lopas (ex-Anduril head of manufacturing), the company has grown from a 1-battery-per-day installation rate in mid-2024 to thousands of units per month rolling off its Austin factory in 2026.
