Black Forest Labs

Black Forest Labs (BFL) is the AI research lab behind Latent Diffusion, Stable Diffusion, and now the FLUX model family — foundational text-to-image and video generation systems. Founded in 2024 by Robin Rombach (CEO) and co-founders who built Stable Diffusion at LMU Munich, BFL sells access to its FLUX models via API and enterprise licensing. Developers and businesses embed FLUX directly into their products; current enterprise customers include Adobe, Canva, Meta, Snap, Microsoft, Picsart, and ElevenLabs. In July 2026, BFL launched FLUX 3, a jointly-trained multimodal model that generates images, audio/video clips up to 20 seconds, and extends the same architecture to robotic vision and actions — a significant leap beyond image-only generation. BFL operates from Freiburg, Germany (primary R&D) and San Francisco (commercial expansion), with roughly 107 employees as of mid-2026. The company leans on open-source releases to build ecosystem loyalty while monetizing premium/enterprise model variants.
