Exa

Exa builds a search engine designed specifically for AI agents and developers — not human end-users. Traditional search engines like Google match keywords; Exa uses neural embedding models to understand the semantic meaning of web pages and queries, then retrieves results via a fast developer API. The company crawls the entire web, converts pages into dense vector embeddings, and stores them in its own high-performance vector database. AI developers — building coding agents, enterprise copilots, research tools, or autonomous agents — call Exa's API to give their products fresh, semantically-relevant web data in real time. Customers include Cursor, Cognition, HubSpot, OpenRouter, and Monday.com, plus 5,000+ other companies and 400,000+ developers. Exa operates its own independent search index (not a wrapper around Google or Bing), which it argues gives it unique control over quality, latency, and cost. Founded in 2021 in San Francisco by Will Bryk and Jeff Wang.
