Waymo

Waymo is Alphabet's autonomous driving company, founded in 2009 as Google's self-driving car project. It builds and operates a fully driverless ride-hail service called Waymo One, powered by its proprietary "Waymo Driver" stack — a combination of LiDAR, radar, cameras, and AI software that replaces the human driver entirely. Riders book trips through a smartphone app; no safety driver is in the vehicle. The company operates its own fleet of purpose-built robotaxis and partners with OEMs (Jaguar, Geely's Zeekr, and its new Ojai platform) rather than licensing software to third parties. Revenue comes from per-trip fares. Waymo currently serves six-plus U.S. cities including San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles, Austin, Atlanta, Houston, and San Diego, with active expansion into London, Tokyo, and Munich. Its primary customers are ordinary urban riders. The company also contracts with fleet operators (Uber, Lyft, Avis) to manage cleaning, charging, and maintenance in new markets.
